In addition to the logging instructions in this article, there's new, integrated logging capability with Azure Monitoring. You'll find more on this capability in the Send logs to Azure Monitor section.


The Filesystem option is for temporary debugging purposes, and turns itself off in 12 hours. The Blob option is for long-term logging, and needs a blob storage container to write logs to. The Blob option also includes additional information in the log messages, such as the ID of the origin VM instance of the log message (InstanceId), thread ID (Tid), and a more granular timestamp (EventTickCount).

Currently only .NET application logs can be written to the blob storage. Java, PHP, Node.js, Python application logs can only be stored on the App Service file system (without code modifications to write logs to external storage).

Before you stream logs in real time, enable the log type that you want. Any information written to the console output or files ending in .txt, .log, or .htm that are stored in the /home/LogFiles directory (D:\home\LogFiles) is streamed by App Service.

For Linux/custom containers, the ZIP file contains console output logs for both the docker host and the docker container. For a scaled-out app, the ZIP file contains one set of logs for each instance. In the App Service file system, these log files are the contents of the /home/LogFiles directory.

Cloud Logging is integrated with Cloud Monitoring, Error Reporting, and Cloud Trace so you can troubleshoot issues across your services. Configure alerts for logs so you stay up to date on important events.

Logs Explorer enables you to search, sort, and analyze logs through flexible query statements, along with rich histogram visualizations, a simple field explorer, and ability to save the queries. Set alerts to notify you whenever a specific message appears in your included logs, or use Cloud Monitoring to alert on logs-based metrics you define.

Error Reporting automatically analyzes your logs for exceptions and intelligently aggregates them into meaningful error groups. See your top or new errors at a glance and set up notifications to automatically alert you when a new error group is identified.

Flow log data is collected outside of the path of your network traffic, and therefore does not affect network throughput or latency. You can create or delete flow logs without any risk of impact to network performance.

After you create a flow log, it can take several minutes to begin collecting and publishing data to the chosen destinations. Flow logs do not capture real-time log streams for your network interfaces. For more information, see Create a flow log.

The aggregation interval is the period of time during which a particular flow is captured and aggregated into a flow log record. By default, the maximum aggregation interval is 10 minutes. When you create a flow log, you can optionally specify a maximum aggregation interval of 1 minute. Flow logs with a maximum aggregation interval of 1 minute produce a higher volume of flow log records than flow logs with a maximum aggregation interval of 10 minutes.

After data is captured within an aggregation interval, it takes additional time to process and publish the data to CloudWatch Logs or Amazon S3. The flow log service typically delivers logs to CloudWatch Logs in about 5 minutes and to Amazon S3 in about 10 minutes. However, log delivery is on a best effort basis, and your logs might be delayed beyond the typical delivery time.

With a custom format, you specify which fields are included in the flow log records and in which order. This enables you to create flow logs that are specific to your needs and to omit fields that are not relevant. Using a custom format can reduce the need for separate processes to extract specific information from the published flow logs. You can specify any number of the available flow log fields, but you must specify at least one.

To track charges from publishing flow logs, you can apply cost allocation tags to your destination resource. Thereafter, your AWS cost allocation report includes usage and costs aggregated by these tags. You can apply tags that represent business categories (such as cost centers, application names, or owners) to organize your costs. For more information, see the following:

CloudWatch Logs enables you to centralize the logs from all of your systems, applications, and AWS services that you use, in a single, highly scalable service. You can then easily view them, search them for specific error codes or patterns, filter them based on specific fields, or archive them securely for future analysis. CloudWatch Logs enables you to see all of your logs, regardless of their source, as a single and consistent flow of events ordered by time.

Amazon Kinesis Data Streams is a web service you can use for rapid andcontinuous data intake and aggregation. The type of data used includes ITinfrastructure log data, application logs, social media, market data feeds, andweb clickstream data. Because the response time for the data intake andprocessing is in real time, processing is typically lightweight. Used alone, cf logs will tail the combined stream of logs from each Cloud Foundry service involved in your application deploy. Running with the --recent flag will stream the entire logs buffer for your app.

CDF logs are used for troubleshooting purposes within Citrix products. Citrix Support uses CDF traces to identify issues with application and desktop brokering, user authentication, Virtual Delivery Agent (VDA) registration. This article discusses how to capture Cloud Connector data that can be used to troubleshoot and resolve issues you might experience in your environment.

CloudFront standard logs (also known as access logs) give you visibility into requests that are made to a CloudFront distribution. The logs can be analyzed for a variety of use cases, such as determining which objects are the most requested or which edge locations receive the most traffic. You can also use logging to troubleshoot errors or gain performance insights.

Many AWS services write logs to CloudWatch Logs natively, while others write to Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) or to both CloudWatch Logs and Amazon S3. For a list of services, see AWS Services That Publish Logs to CloudWatch Logs in the Amazon CloudWatch Logs User Guide.

This is the name of the S3 bucket where your CloudFront logs are being delivered. The S3 bucket should be in the same AWS Region where the template is being deployed. The Lambda function deployment package is hosted on an S3 bucket in us-east-1. If your logging bucket is in a different Region, you will need to host the deployment package for the function in a bucket in that Region and edit the CloudFormation template to reference that location.

After your CloudFront logs are in CloudWatch, you can use Contributor Insights, metric filters, and CloudWatch Logs Insights queries to analyze them. When combined with the CloudWatch metrics emitted from CloudFront, you can create valuable dashboards for your CloudFront distribution.

Using Contributor Insights with CloudFront logs allows you to view requests made to your distribution from several dimensions. Here are a few examples of these rules, along with a link to the JSON-formatted rule definitions in GitHub.

You can use CloudWatch metric filters to extract meaningful metrics from your CloudFront logs. In some cases, the number of possible results for a log field is known, such as HTTP method or HTTP response code. In these cases, you can create metric filter expressions to collect these data points. For more information, see Filter and Pattern Syntax in the Amazon CloudWatch Logs User Guide.

You can use the following format for your CloudFront logs. This filter pattern will identify all of the log fields available. You can then use a numeric or equality operator to match a given log field.

You can use the following CloudWatch Logs Insights query template to parse out all the available log fields in your CloudFront logs. Then, you can easily use filter and group expressions by referring to the field name directly.

When evaluating costs, consider the volume of logs ingested into CloudWatch. A higher volume of logs impacts the cost for log ingestion, the number of matched log events in Contributor Insights, and the total amount of data queried in CloudWatch Logs Insights.
