French in origin, the Hochar family arrived in Lebanon in the 12th century. Serge Hochar (1939-2014) became Chateau Musar winemaker in 1959. He then spent 18 years perfecting the formula for the Chateau Musar Red and was chosen as Decanter Magazine's first 'Man of the Year' in 1984 for his dedication to producing superb quality wines during Lebanon's Civil War (1975-1990). The wines of chateau Musar are unique expressions from a country with an ancient wine-making culture, as vines have been cultivated in Lebanon for over 6,000 years.In 2006, the Hochar family also obtained organic certification for some of its properties, making Chateau Musar the first winery in Lebanon to produce organic wine. The vineyards are planted at 1,000 meters above sea level in the Bekaa Valley in a wide range of gravelly soils over limestone subsoils. The plantings include Cabernet Sauvignon, Carignan and Cinsault, as well as Grenache and Syrah - all varietals that thrive in the valley's hot climate. The estate also produces a Chateau Musar white wine from a blend of Viognier, Vermentino and Chardonnay.
